Description
This is an old industrial cast copper ingot made at the former White Pine copper mine at White Pine, Michigan. It is marked "CR" for Copper Range, the owners of the property.
It weighs about 51 pounds and is about 19-1/2 inches long, 3-1/2 inches wide and 3 inches thick.
There are some sprues around the edges, partially ground down; scan 1, lower left edge, you can see a flange of extra metal curving over the edge; scan 3, top edge, two flanges of metal along edge, and on the bottom edge, the extra metal has been ground down.
It has nice color and a very sharp CR; only wiped it off with soapy water and a rag; some people clean them off with dilute acid and a wire brush to remove the oxidation.
These were being poured up until 1982 when the mine began producing pure copper by the electrolytic process.
See page 33 of my book for pictures and information,
White Pine Copper: An Illustrated History of the Mine and Its Ingots.
This book is available from my ebay store.
The White Pine mine produced over 4 billion pounds of copper and 45 million ounces of silver from 1955 to 1995.
Local pickup only because the rough edges make it too big for a flat rate box.
If you buy more than one lot in my sale, I will reduce the postage, but please wait for the combined shipping invoice before you pay.
